A few weeks ago my hubby and son were out for the week at a Scout Camp in the Sierras. Ash, who is totally in love with her big brother, was absolutely devastated that she was going to be separated from her best friend for a whole week. They have NEVER been apart for any length of time. I asked her what we could do to help keep her mind off of him being gone and what we could do to entertain her for the week. She settled on having a movie night with friends. Her request was to have a Nancy Drew Party and watch the movie. Well, since I loved Nancy Drew as a kid, I was totally excited! Lucky for me, so was Shana of Society Sweets. She was kind enough to create some adorable goodies for me…even though she was in the middle of moving! Here’s a little peek at the fun we had…
I wanted there to be a fun activity for the girls. No Nancy Drew Party is complete without a mystery of it’s own, so I created “The Case of the Missing Picnic.” When the girls arrived they were given sleuthing kits and notebooks. In each kit was a disguise, a magnifying glass and a piece of a puzzle that I created from unfinished wood puzzle pieces I found at Hobby Lobby. I painted them with black chalkboard paint and wrote clues on them with white chalk markers. They were told that their dinner had been stolen and if they didn’t want to go hungry, they needed to solve the clues to find the picnic. The first clue was included on the puzzle and it started them on a scavenger hunt around the neighborhood solving riddles and finding envelopes with clues in them. Finlly they were led to a picnic table in the neighborhood where they found the trunk with their picnic in it. They LOVED it!
I made the glittered key, the mystery banner using coffee filters that I hand wrote on in script font to make them look like old book pages or letters. Ash made the pom pom garland.
For each of the desserts I used random ephemera letters to create the titles to give them more of a ransom look instead of your traditional labels. How amazing are those hand stamped fondant key and thumbprint cupcake toppers by Society Sweets??
The type cookies were my absolute favorite. SO cool!! (and delish!)
The cute girlies in their disguises…
Their sleuthing kits were made from paper lunch bags and Nancy Drew silhouettes I created.
I added a few extra touches with old book covers I found online and some other printables I created. This question mark art was an easy print out cute out and laid on to of an old book page scrapbook paper.
I loved watching the girls try and solve the puzzles! They were SO into it!
Celebrating the recovery of their dinner!
It was such a fun night. The girls had so much fun together and Ashley and I had a whole week of fun bonding while we planned and created the fun! I hope you are feeling inspired to create a Nancy Drew party of your very own. You can find so many more of our party ideas in our Entertaining Gallery.
